All about pearls: essential gems

Pearls are still considered as magical and fascinating gems. They are the result of the reaction of the oyster when a foreign body comes into its valves. Oysters cover the new element with a number of nacre layers. Pearls are mostly composed of calcium carbonate and these are the main characteristics that make a piece valuable:
lustre (brilliance and ability to reflect the light)
colour (from white to pink, gold, grey, green and even black)
shape (from round to baroque, determining its value)
surface (the more perfect, the higher its value)
size (the bigger, the higher its value)
Because of the rarity and high price of natural pearls, normally jewellers use cultured pearls that allow us to enjoy them at reasonable prices. Nowadays the market is invaded by freshwater cultured pearls coming from China and Japan.
